Owning Your Story – The Power of Authenticity

When My Voice Came Back

I won’t pretend that was easy. But it taught me things I couldn’t have learned any other way — about self-compassion, patience, identity, and hope. It taught me the importance of lending one’s voice to those who don’t have a voice, either literally or figuratively.

Recently, I shared that part of my story with a colleague. They opened up in return — about a similar medical experience that had affected their own voice. It was the first time they had shared that part of themselves in a work setting in 13 years.

When we allow ourselves to be seen, we often give someone else permission to do the same.

That’s the whole thing, really. Our vulnerability can become the bridge that turns silence into connection and fear into freedom.

People don’t connect with perfection. They connect with presence — with the parts of us that feel real. When we stop performing and start telling the truth about where we actually are, something shifts. We stop trying to become who we think we “should” be, and we start reflecting who we’ve been all along.

Vulnerability isn’t weakness. It’s courage. It’s the doorway to deeper connection, greater confidence, and more meaningful relationships — with ourselves, with the people around us, and in the way we show up in our careers.

Over time, those layers make it harder to trust our own voice — or even recognize it. I saw this recently with a client who spent most of her career staying quiet in meetings, deferring to louder voices even when she disagreed. Coaching didn’t just help her “speak up” — it helped her figure out whose expectations she’d been performing for in the first place, and what she actually thought once that noise was gone. That’s the layer underneath the layer, and it’s usually where the real work happens.

Through life coaching, I help people do exactly that: look within, release what no longer belongs to them, and reconnect with the truth of who they are. That inner work tends to ripple outward — into clearer relationships, steadier confidence, and more honesty in everyday life.
